Convert MOV to MP4 without uploading your video

iPhone and Mac videos arrive as MOV files, and MOV is the format most likely to be refused by a Windows app, an Android phone, a web form or a smart TV. Converting to MP4 gives you a file that plays almost everywhere, and when the video inside is H.264 it can be done without touching the picture at all.

Why iPhone videos need converting

Apple's Camera records MOV files, and since iOS 11 its default setting can use HEVC (H.265) rather than H.264. HEVC makes smaller files, but many computers, TVs and websites still cannot play it. Converting to MP4 here turns an HEVC video into H.264, which almost everything plays. The Most Compatible camera setting records H.264 in the first place.

Copy or re-encode

The converter reads the file first. A MOV with an H.264 picture and AAC sound is copied into an MP4 as it is, which takes seconds and loses nothing. A MOV with HEVC, ProRes or another codec is re-encoded to H.264 and AAC, which takes longer and uses the quality setting you choose.

Size and quality

A copied file is almost exactly the size of the original, because nothing about the picture changes. A re-encoded file can be smaller or larger depending on the quality you pick: Balanced suits most videos, High keeps more detail, and Small is for email and messaging. If the result is still too big for where you are sending it, run it through the video compressor.

How this converter works

The page reads your MOV file's header first. If the picture is H.264 and the sound is AAC or MP3, they are copied into the new MP4 without re-encoding, which takes seconds and loses nothing. Anything else is re-encoded to H.264 and AAC at the quality you choose, so the result plays everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MOV to MP4?
Drop your MOV file into the box above, or click to choose it, pick a quality and press Convert to MP4. When it finishes, press Download. The conversion runs in your browser, so the video stays on your device.
Is my video uploaded when I convert it?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine itself, about 31 MB, is downloaded, once. Your MOV file never leaves your device, and there is no watermark and no account.
Will converting MOV to MP4 reduce the quality?
Often not. If the picture inside the MOV is already H.264 with AAC or MP3 sound, it is copied into the MP4 unchanged. Otherwise it is re-encoded once, to H.264 and AAC, at the quality you choose, and the difference is hard to see at Balanced or High.
What is a MOV file?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, and it is what iPhones, iPads and Macs record in. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC sound, and it plays natively on Apple devices, while many Windows and Android apps and some websites refuse it.
What is MP4?
MP4 is the most widely supported video container. It usually holds H.264 (sometimes HEVC) video with AAC sound, and it plays on practically every phone, computer, TV and browser, which makes it the safe default for sharing and uploading.
Why will my iPhone video not play on Windows?
Most often because the video is HEVC, which many Windows computers cannot play without an extra codec. Converting it to MP4 here re-encodes it to H.264, which plays on practically everything.
Can I convert a very long iPhone video?
Yes, within the browser's limit: a file over about 2 GB cannot be read. A copy conversion is quick whatever the length; re-encoding a long HEVC video takes longer. To make a long video smaller first, cut it with the video trimmer.
