Cut the part you want out of any audio file

Cutting audio is how you make a ringtone, trim the silence off a recording or pull one answer out of a long interview. This cutter plays your file and lets you mark where the clip starts and ends while you listen, with an optional fade so the cut does not click. It runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Mark the cut by ear

Play the file and press Set start here where the clip should begin, then Set end here where it should stop. The times appear in the Start and End boxes, and you can also type them as seconds (90) or minutes and seconds (1:30). Leave End empty to cut from the start time to the end of the file.

Fades remove the click

An abrupt cut in the middle of a sound can produce a click or a sudden jump. Turning on the fade adds a one second fade in at the start and a one second fade out at the end, which is enough to make a short clip, such as a ringtone, start and stop smoothly. It needs a clip longer than two seconds.

Which format to save as

The cut is saved by encoding it to the format you choose. MP3 is the safe choice for any device, and M4A keeps good quality in less space. WAV does not compress at all, so it adds no further loss, which is the best choice if you are going to edit the clip again, at the price of a larger file.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cut an MP3 file?
Drop the file into the box, play it, press Set start here and Set end here at the points you want, then press Cut audio. The tool makes a new file with just that part and you download it.
How do I make a ringtone from a song?
Find the part you like, mark its start and end, keep the clip short, turn on the fade and save it as MP3 or M4A. Phones differ in the formats and lengths they accept for ringtones, so check what yours needs.
What time format can I type?
Seconds, such as 90, or minutes and seconds, such as 1:30. Decimals work too, for example 1:30.5. Leave End empty to cut to the end of the file.
Why add a fade?
A cut in the middle of a sound can click or jump. A one second fade in and fade out makes the clip start and stop smoothly. It needs a clip longer than two seconds.
Does cutting an MP3 lower the quality?
The cut is encoded again in the format you choose, so saving as MP3 or M4A adds one more round of compression. Choose a bitrate at or above the original's, or save as WAV for no further loss.
Can I cut audio from a video?
Yes. Drop a video into the box and the tool cuts its sound track and saves it as audio.
Which audio formats work?
MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus and other common audio formats your browser can read, plus the sound of video files. You can save the cut as MP3, M4A, WAV or OGG.
Is my audio uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The cut is made in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many clips you cut.
