Convert any audio file to the format you need

Different devices, editors and websites want different audio formats. This converter changes a file between MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG and Opus, lets you choose the bitrate, and can mix a stereo recording down to mono. You can also give it a video and keep only the sound. It runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.

Which format for which job

MP3 plays on practically everything. M4A (AAC) gives better quality than MP3 at the same size. WAV is uncompressed and keeps every detail, which editors like, but the files are large. FLAC is also lossless but smaller than WAV. OGG (Vorbis) is an open alternative to MP3, and Opus is the most efficient choice for speech and for small files.

Bitrate in plain words

Bitrate is how much data one second of sound gets, and it sets both the size and the quality of a lossy file. 64 kbps is 0.48 MB a minute, 128 kbps is 0.96 MB, 192 kbps is 1.44 MB, 256 kbps is 1.92 MB and 320 kbps is 2.40 MB. A CD-quality stereo WAV is about 1,411 kbps, roughly 10.6 MB a minute, which is why lossy formats exist.

Converting between lossy formats

Every conversion from one lossy format to another, such as MP3 to M4A, compresses the sound again, so quality can only stay the same or drop. Converting to WAV or FLAC does not bring back detail that an MP3 already threw away. Keep the original file if you can, and pick a bitrate at or above the original.

Cut it, or take sound from a video

To use only part of a recording, cut it with the MP3 cutter. To take the sound out of a video as an audio file, the MP4 to MP3 converter does that, and you can also drop a video straight into this converter. If a recording is too quiet, raise it with increase video volume.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert audio to MP3?
Drop your audio file into the box, leave Convert to on MP3, choose a bitrate (192 kbps is a good balance) and press Convert audio. The tool makes a new MP3 for you to download.
Which audio formats can I convert?
You can convert MP3, WAV, M4A, AAC, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WMA and AIFF files to MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG or Opus. You can also drop in a video to take its sound.
What bitrate should I choose?
128 kbps is fine for speech and podcasts, 192 kbps is a good balance for music, and 256 or 320 kbps is for the highest quality. WAV and FLAC ignore the setting because they keep every detail.
How big will the file be?
A minute of audio is about 0.48 MB at 64 kbps, 0.96 MB at 128 kbps, 1.44 MB at 192 kbps, 1.92 MB at 256 kbps and 2.40 MB at 320 kbps. A CD-quality stereo WAV is roughly 10.6 MB a minute.
Does converting to WAV or FLAC improve the quality?
No. These formats keep every detail of the file you give them, but they cannot restore detail that an MP3 or another lossy file had already discarded. They are useful for editing, not for repairing.
What does mixing down to mono do?
It combines the left and right channels into one, which roughly halves the data. It suits speech, such as interviews and voice notes, where stereo adds nothing.
Is the Opus output as good as other Opus encoders?
Opus files here are made with the encoder built into the in-browser FFmpeg, which is simpler than the reference one, so at very low bitrates a desktop encoder such as opusenc may sound better. For speech and everyday music at 64 kbps and above it produces a normal Opus file that plays in current browsers and apps.
Can I convert the sound of a video?
Yes. Drop the video file in and the tool keeps only its audio. The MP4 to MP3 converter does the same job with video formats in mind.
Is my audio uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many files you convert.
