Free Civil Engineering

Civil and construction calculators for the jobs that come up before a drawing is final: how much concrete a slab needs, how many bricks a wall takes, how many tiles cover a floor once grout and wastage are included, how much reinforcement steel weighs and costs, and how a simple beam behaves under a load. Many follow Indian practice (the concrete mix tool uses IS 10262:2019, bearing capacity uses Terzaghi's theory with IS 6403, and the staircase tool applies the NBC and Blondel's rule), and the board foot and brick tools also cover US sizes.

They are meant for preliminary design, quantity estimates and checking your own working. Anything that carries load or protects people should be designed and signed off by a licensed structural or geotechnical engineer, and quantities should be confirmed against the drawings and the supplier's specifications.

Which tool should I use?

  • Concrete for a slab, beam, column or footing: Concrete Volume Calculator — volume plus material quantities for M20.
  • A mix design for a given grade: Concrete Mix Design — IS 10262:2019, M10 to M40, cement, water and aggregates for the volume you need.
  • Steel reinforcement: Rebar Calculator — weight and cost from a bar schedule, with wastage.
  • Bricks and mortar for a wall: Brick Calculator — modular, standard Indian and US brick sizes.
  • Tiles for a floor or wall: Tile Calculator — grout joint, wastage, box count and cost.
  • Paint for a room: Paint Calculator — subtracts doors and windows and counts coats.
  • A staircase layout: Staircase Calculator — risers, treads and stringer length, checked against the NBC with Blondel's formula.
  • A roof pitch or rafter length: Roof Pitch Calculator — from rise and run, an angle or a pitch notation.
  • Reactions and bending moment in a beam: Beam Calculator — simply supported beams under a distributed or point load; the cantilever version handles a beam fixed at one end.
  • Section properties: Moment of Inertia Calculator — second moment of area for rectangles, circles, hollow, I and T sections.
  • Soil bearing capacity: Bearing Capacity Calculator — ultimate and safe values for strip and rectangular footings.
  • Earthwork volumes: Cut & Fill Calculator — cut and fill from a grid of levels, with swell and shrinkage.
  • Area of an irregular plot: Coordinate Area Calculator — area, perimeter and centroid from vertices.
  • A first budget for a house: Construction Cost Estimator — area, floors, city tier and construction type, with a trade-wise breakdown.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use these results for structural design?
Use them for preliminary design, quantities and checking your own working. They are not a substitute for a design by a licensed structural or geotechnical engineer, and anything that affects safety should be verified by one.
How much extra material should I allow?
The tile, brick and rebar tools let you enter wastage, and the paint tool accounts for doors, windows and coats. How much to allow depends on the material, the layout and the installer, so use the figure your supplier or site engineer recommends instead of a fixed rule.
Which standards do the Indian calculators follow?
The concrete mix design tool follows IS 10262:2019 for grades M10 to M40, bearing capacity uses Terzaghi's theory with IS 6403, and the staircase tool checks the NBC with Blondel's formula. Each tool page states the method it uses.
What is the difference between the beam and cantilever calculators?
The Beam Calculator handles simply supported beams: reactions, shear force, bending moment and deflection under a distributed or point load. The Cantilever Beam Calculator handles a beam fixed at one end and free at the other: fixed-end moment, shear and tip deflection.
How reliable is the construction cost estimate?
The estimator multiplies built-up area by fixed per-square-foot rates for the city tier and construction type you choose. Those rates are built-in estimates, not quotes and not tied to a published index, so use the result for a first budget and ask contractors for quotes before you commit.
