Share the video, not the information hidden inside it

A video file carries more than pictures and sound. It can also hold the date it was recorded, the make and model of the device, the software that wrote it and sometimes where you were standing. This tool copies the picture and sound into a new file with those tags removed. Nothing is re-encoded and nothing is uploaded.

What can hide inside a video file

Depending on the camera or app, a video can store its creation time, the device make and model, the name of the software that last saved it, a title or comment, and a location. Some phones also record location or motion as separate data tracks inside the file. None of this shows up when you play the video, which is why it is easy to share by accident.

What this tool removes and keeps

It removes the tags, the chapter markers and any extra data tracks, and keeps the picture, the sound and the orientation, so a portrait video does not turn sideways. The picture and sound are copied exactly as they were, so the quality is identical and the job takes seconds.

What it cannot remove

Metadata is only what is stored about the video, not what is in it. A recognisable street, a house number, a face, a name on a screen or a voice is part of the picture and sound, and stays. Look through the clip before you share it, and cut anything you would not want a stranger to see with the video trimmer.

Do it before you share

Many platforms strip some metadata when they process an upload, but they do not all do it and a file sent directly, by email or in a message, usually keeps everything. Cleaning the file yourself means you do not have to rely on that. To make the file smaller as well, use the video compressor.

Frequently asked questions

What is video metadata?
It is information stored inside a video file alongside the picture and sound, such as the date it was recorded, the device make and model, the software that saved it, and sometimes a location. It is invisible during playback.
How do I remove metadata from a video?
Drop the video into the box and press Remove metadata. The tool copies the picture and sound into a new file without the tags, chapters and extra data tracks, and you download the clean copy.
Does it remove the GPS location from a video?
It removes location tags and the separate data tracks that some phones add, because only the picture and the sound are copied into the new file. Check the clip itself too, since a location can also be visible in the footage.
Does removing metadata reduce the video quality?
No. Nothing is re-encoded. The picture and sound are copied exactly, so the quality is identical to the original and the job is very quick.
Will the video turn sideways?
No. The orientation of the picture is kept, so a portrait or rotated video still plays the right way up.
Do social media sites remove metadata anyway?
Many strip some of it when they process an upload, but not all of them do and the details differ by site. A file you send directly usually keeps its metadata, so cleaning it yourself is the safe choice.
Which video formats work?
MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and other common formats that your browser can open. The new file keeps the container of your original.
Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The file is processed in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many files you clean.
