Grab the exact frame you want

Play or drag to the moment you want, step one frame at a time until it is exactly right, and press the button to save that frame as an image at the video's full size. Take as many as you like and download them one by one or all together in a ZIP. The video is never uploaded.

Finding the exact frame

Use the player to get close, then the buttons to move by one second, a tenth of a second or a single frame. The keyboard works too: the left and right arrows step one frame, Shift with an arrow steps one second, and C takes the screenshot. While the video plays, the tool measures its real frame rate from the gaps between frames; until then it treats one frame as 1/30 of a second.

Full size, not a screen grab

The picture is taken from the video itself at its own pixel size, so a 1920 × 1080 video gives a 1920 × 1080 image, whatever size the player is on your screen. A normal screenshot of a playing video is limited to the size of the player and can include its controls. Frames are taken from the exact moment shown, not from the nearest keyframe.

PNG, JPEG or WebP

PNG keeps every pixel exactly and makes the largest files, which suits text, screen recordings and anything you plan to edit further. JPEG and WebP are smaller because they discard detail you are unlikely to notice, and are saved at quality 92 out of 100; WebP is usually a little smaller than JPEG at the same look. For photos and sharing, JPEG is the safe choice.

What it cannot capture

The tool takes frames from what your browser can play. Some formats, such as AVI or MKV files, or video using codecs your browser does not support, will not play, in which case convert the video to MP4 first. It does not work with copy-protected streams. To see a whole video at a glance instead of one frame, use the video thumbnail generator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I take a screenshot from a video?
Drop the video into the box, play or drag to the moment you want, and press Take screenshot of this frame. The image appears below, and you can download it. Repeat for as many frames as you like.
How do I capture one exact frame?
Pause near the moment, then use the frame buttons or the left and right arrow keys to move one frame at a time until it is right, and take the screenshot. The time of each screenshot is shown to the millisecond.
What resolution are the screenshots?
The video's own resolution. A 1920 × 1080 video gives 1920 × 1080 images, a 1280 × 720 video gives 1280 × 720. The size of the player on your screen makes no difference.
Which format should I save screenshots in?
PNG for text, screen recordings and anything you will edit, because it loses nothing. JPEG or WebP for photos and sharing, because the files are much smaller. JPEG and WebP are saved at quality 92 out of 100.
Can I take several screenshots and download them together?
Yes. Every screenshot is added to the list under the video, and with two or more you can press Download all as ZIP to get them in one file. You can keep up to 60 at a time.
Why will my video not play?
The tool uses your browser's own player, so it can only read formats the browser supports. AVI, MKV and some newer codecs are the usual culprits. Convert the video to MP4 with the video converter and try again.
What is the difference between this and a normal screenshot?
A normal screenshot captures the player as it appears on screen, at its size and with its controls. This takes the frame from the video file itself at full resolution, at the exact time you choose, with nothing else in the picture.
Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The frames are taken in your browser, so the video never leaves your device. It is free, with no account and no limit on how many screenshots you take.
