Strip the sound and keep the picture exactly as it was

Sometimes a video needs to be silent: a screen recording with notification sounds in it, a clip with a conversation in the background, or a loop for a web page that should never play audio. This tool deletes the audio track and copies the picture across unchanged, so nothing is re-encoded and nothing is uploaded.

Why it is fast and loses nothing

The video stream is copied as it is, with no re-encoding, so the picture is bit for bit the same as in your file and the job finishes about as fast as the file can be read and written. The only change is that the audio stream is left out. The result keeps the same container as your original, for example an MP4 stays an MP4.

Muting versus removing

Muting a clip in an editor lowers the volume to zero but the audio track is still in the file. Removing it deletes the track entirely, so the file has nothing to play and is a little smaller. If you only want to make the sound quieter, use the volume tool instead of deleting it.

When to take the audio out

Take the audio out when a background conversation should stay private, when music in a clip could cause a problem where you post it, when a silent loop is going on a page, or when a screen recording picked up sounds you do not want. If you need the sound as its own file first, the MP4 to MP3 converter extracts it.
