Crop keeps the original sharpness; the other two fit the whole picture inside the new shape.

Applies to blurred background and black bars, and a smaller size finishes faster. Crop never changes the pixel size.

Fit a video to a new shape without squashing it

A landscape video does not fill a vertical phone screen, and a vertical one leaves empty sides on a TV. This tool puts your video into the shape you choose and gives you three ways to deal with the leftover space: a blurred copy of the picture behind it, plain black bars, or a crop that fills the frame. It runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.

The three ways to fit

A blurred background keeps the whole picture visible and fills the empty space with a soft, enlarged copy of the same video, which is the usual look for landscape clips posted vertically. Black bars also keep the whole picture but leave the space plain. Crop to fill cuts the edges off so the picture fills the new shape completely, which loses part of the scene but keeps the original sharpness.

Which shape to choose

9:16 is the full-screen vertical shape used by phone-first formats such as Reels, Shorts and TikTok. 1:1 is square, and 4:5 is a tall shape for feed posts. 16:9 is the widescreen shape of YouTube and most TVs, 4:3 is the older square-ish TV shape, and 21:9 is a cinema-style wide frame.

Sizes you will get

With the shorter side set to 1080 pixels, the sizes are 1080 × 1920 for 9:16, 1080 × 1080 for 1:1, 1080 × 1350 for 4:5, 1920 × 1080 for 16:9, 1440 × 1080 for 4:3 and 2520 × 1080 for 21:9. At 720 pixels they are 720 × 1280, 720 × 720, 720 × 900, 1280 × 720, 960 × 720 and 1680 × 720. Crop does not rescale, so its size follows the part of the picture that is kept.

Check the shape first

Not sure what shape your video is? The aspect ratio calculator works it out from the width and height. To shrink the file afterwards, use the resolution changer or the video compressor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I turn a landscape video into a vertical video?
Drop the video into the box, choose 9:16, keep the blurred background fit and press Change aspect ratio. The result is a 1080 × 1920 video with your clip in the middle over a blurred copy of itself.
What is the difference between blurred background, black bars and crop?
Blurred background and black bars both keep the entire picture and fill the leftover space, with a soft copy of the video or with plain black. Crop to fill removes the edges so the picture fills the new shape, which loses part of the scene.
Which aspect ratio should I use for Reels, Shorts or TikTok?
Use 9:16, the full-screen vertical shape these formats are made for. At 1080 pixels on the shorter side that is 1080 × 1920.
Will changing the aspect ratio stretch my video?
No. The picture is never stretched or squashed. It is either fitted inside the new shape with the leftover space filled, or cropped to it.
Does the video get blurry?
Fitting a small video into a 1080 pixel shape enlarges it, which can look soft. Choose the 720 pixel size to avoid enlarging a low-resolution clip, or use crop to fill, which keeps the original pixels.
What pixel sizes will I get?
With the shorter side at 1080: 9:16 is 1080 × 1920, 1:1 is 1080 × 1080, 4:5 is 1080 × 1350, 16:9 is 1920 × 1080, 4:3 is 1440 × 1080 and 21:9 is 2520 × 1080. At 720 each shrinks to two thirds.
What happens to the sound?
The sound is kept and saved as AAC, in step with the picture. Only the picture is reshaped, so nothing is cut from or added to the audio.
Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The video is reshaped in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many videos you change.
