Turn a heavy GIF into a light video

A GIF is easy to share but large, limited to 256 colours and often choppy. The same animation as an MP4 or WebM is usually far smaller and plays smoothly, and most websites and messaging apps play it just as readily. This converter turns a GIF into either format on your own device, so the file is never uploaded.

Why a video beats a GIF

The GIF format dates from 1987 and stores nearly every frame in full, with at most 256 colours. Video formats store only what changes between frames and use far better compression, so the same clip is typically a fraction of the size and keeps its colours. That is why many sites quietly turn uploaded GIFs into video behind the scenes.

MP4 or WebM

MP4 with H.264 is the safe choice: it plays on phones, computers, messaging apps and social platforms. WebM is an open format that browsers play well and that suits web pages. If you do not know which to pick, choose MP4.

Sound and looping

A GIF has no sound, so the video you get has no audio track either. A GIF also loops forever by itself, but a video file has a fixed length, so you can choose to play the GIF up to 10 times in the file. On a web page, you can also add the loop attribute to the video element and let the browser repeat it.

Need the other direction?

To turn a video clip into a GIF, use the video to GIF converter. To repeat a video many times, use loop video, and to shrink the result further, use the video compressor.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a GIF to MP4?
Drop the GIF into the box, leave the format on MP4 and press Convert to video. The tool makes an MP4 with the same animation, and you download it. Your GIF is not changed.
Why is the video smaller than the GIF?
GIF stores almost every frame in full with at most 256 colours. Video formats store only the changes between frames and compress far better, so the same animation takes a fraction of the space.
Should I choose MP4 or WebM?
Choose MP4 for the widest support, including phones, messaging apps and social platforms. Choose WebM for web pages, where it is well supported and efficient.
Will the video have sound?
No. A GIF has no audio, so the video has no audio track either. If you want music or speech, add it afterwards in a video editor.
Does the video loop like a GIF?
A video file has a fixed length. You can repeat the animation up to 10 times inside the file here, and on a web page you can add the loop attribute to the video element so it repeats on its own.
What happens to transparent parts of the GIF?
Video formats such as MP4 cannot hold transparency, so transparent areas turn black.
Does the picture lose quality?
The frames are encoded at a high quality setting, and the video keeps the GIF's size, rounded to an even number of pixels, which video needs. It will not look worse than the GIF.
Is my GIF uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many GIFs you convert.
