Make a quiet video louder without touching the picture
A clip recorded far from the speaker, or at a low microphone level, can be too quiet to hear on a phone speaker. This tool raises the volume by an amount you choose, or levels the whole clip to a standard loudness, and copies the picture across untouched. It runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.
What the decibel steps mean
Decibels describe how much the strength of the sound wave changes, and every 6 dB roughly doubles it. +3 dB is about 1.4 times the strength, +6 dB about 2 times, +10 dB about 3.2 times, +15 dB about 5.6 times and +20 dB exactly 10 times. Our ears do not hear a doubling as twice as loud, so +6 dB sounds clearly louder rather than twice as loud, and +10 dB sounds much louder.
Boosting without distortion
A sound wave has a ceiling. If a boost pushes the loudest peaks past it, they are flattened off, which sounds harsh and crackly. The limiter option, on by default, squeezes those peaks just below the ceiling instead of cutting them off, so a bigger boost stays clean. If the sound is already close to the ceiling, a large boost will mostly make the limiter work harder rather than make the clip louder.
Matching a standard loudness
Instead of choosing a number, you can level the clip to −16 LUFS, a loudness commonly used as a target for online video and podcasts. This can turn a quiet clip up or a loud one down, so it ends up at about the same volume as other clips of the same kind. It works on average loudness, which is what you hear, rather than on the single loudest peak.
Why the picture is untouched
Only the audio is processed. The video stream is copied into the new file as it is, so there is no quality loss in the picture and the job is quick. To remove the sound instead, use remove audio from video, and to cut the clip to length first, use the video trimmer.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I make a video louder?
- Drop the video into the box, choose +6 dB for a clear boost (or +10 dB for a quiet recording) and press Make it louder. The tool makes a new file with the louder sound and the picture unchanged, and you download it.
- What does +6 dB or +10 dB mean?
- Decibels measure how much the strength of the sound changes. +3 dB is about 1.4 times, +6 dB about 2 times, +10 dB about 3.2 times, +15 dB about 5.6 times and +20 dB 10 times the original strength.
- Will boosting the volume make the sound distort?
- It can if the loudest peaks are pushed past the ceiling and flattened. The option to stop loud peaks from distorting, on by default, squeezes them instead. If the clip was already loud, a large boost will not get much louder.
- What does matching a standard loudness do?
- It levels the clip to −16 LUFS, a loudness commonly used as a target for online video and podcasts. A quiet clip is turned up and a loud one is turned down, so it sits at a similar level to other clips.
- Can I make a video quieter?
- Matching a standard loudness turns a clip down if it is louder than the target. There is no fixed turn-down step in this tool. To remove the sound completely, use the remove audio tool.
- Why is the result so fast and is the picture changed?
- The picture is copied as it is, with no re-encoding, so it is identical to the original and the job finishes quickly. Only the audio is processed, and it is saved as AAC (or Opus for WebM files).
- Why is my video quiet in the first place?
- Common causes are a microphone far from the speaker, a low recording level, wind or room echo, or a phone that picked up a distant voice. A boost raises the speech and the background noise together, so it helps most on clean but quiet recordings.
- Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
- Nothing is uploaded. The work happens in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many videos you process.
