Make a video smaller by shrinking its picture size
A video's resolution is the number of pixels in each frame, and it is the fastest way to make a big file lighter. This tool resizes a video to a height you choose, such as 1080, 720 or 480, works out the width so the picture is not stretched, and saves a new MP4. It runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.
What 1080p, 720p and 480p mean
The number is the height of the picture in pixels. A 16:9 video at 1080p is 1920 × 1080, at 720p it is 1280 × 720, and at 480p it is 854 × 480. The width is always worked out from your video's own shape, so a 4:3 clip at 720p comes out 960 pixels wide rather than being squeezed into 16:9.
How much smaller does it get?
File size follows the number of pixels. A 720p frame has 44.4% of the pixels of a 1080p frame, which is 2.25 times fewer. A 480p frame has 19.8% of them and a 360p frame (640 × 360) has 11.1%. Going from 720p to 360p leaves 25%. The real file shrinks by a similar order, though the amount depends on the footage.
Shrinking is safe, enlarging is not
Making a video smaller keeps nearly all the detail that a smaller screen can show. Making it larger cannot add detail that was never recorded, it only stretches the pixels, so by default the tool never goes above the original height. There is a checkbox if you really need to upscale, for example to meet a minimum size.
Resolution or compression?
Changing the resolution is one way to lower the size. The video compressor lowers it by changing the quality setting instead and is the better choice when the picture size must stay the same. To change the file type at the same time, use the video converter, and to work out proportions before you resize, try the aspect ratio calculator.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I change the resolution of a video?
- Drop the video into the box, choose the height you want, such as 720, and press Change resolution. The tool works out the width so the picture is not stretched and saves a new MP4 for you to download.
- What is the difference between 1080p, 720p and 480p?
- They are picture heights in pixels. For a 16:9 video, 1080p is 1920 × 1080, 720p is 1280 × 720 and 480p is 854 × 480. A higher number shows more detail and makes a bigger file.
- How much smaller will my video be at 720p?
- A 720p frame has 44.4% of the pixels of a 1080p frame, which is 2.25 times fewer, so the file usually gets noticeably smaller. The exact saving depends on the footage.
- Will the video look stretched?
- No. You choose only the height. The width is calculated from the original shape of the video, so the proportions stay correct, whether it is 16:9, 4:3 or a vertical phone video.
- Can I make a low-resolution video sharper by increasing the resolution?
- No. Enlarging cannot add detail that was never recorded, it only stretches the existing pixels. By default the tool will not go above your video's original height; a checkbox allows it when you must reach a minimum size.
- Does changing the resolution change the frame rate or the sound?
- No. The frame rate and length stay the same, and the sound is carried over as AAC.
- Which resolution should I choose for sharing?
- 720p is a common balance between clarity and size for messages and email. Choose 480p or 360p when file size matters most, and keep 1080p when the video will be watched on a large screen.
- Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
- Nothing is uploaded. The video is resized inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many videos you resize.
