Record, listen back and save, without installing anything

Press Start recording, allow the microphone and speak. A level meter shows that you are being heard, you can pause and resume, and when you stop you can play the recording back before you save it. The recording is made in your browser and stays on your device: it is never uploaded.

How to get a clean recording

Record in a quiet room and keep the microphone about a hand's width from your mouth, a little off to one side so breath does not pop on the letter p. Use headphones if you are playing anything while you record, so the sound does not leak back into the microphone. Run the microphone test first if you are not sure the right device is in use, and leave a second of silence at the start so you are not cut off.

Which file you get

Browsers record in the format they support. Chrome, Edge and Firefox usually give WebM or Ogg with Opus sound, and Safari gives M4A. The page tells you which one you have. For a file that plays everywhere, press Convert to MP3: the conversion happens on your device after a one-time download of the converter engine of about 31 MB, and your recording is not uploaded.

Pause, resume and how long you can record

Pause when you need to think and resume when you are ready; the pause is not recorded. The size readout shows how big the recording has grown. The recording is held in your browser's memory until you save it, so for very long sessions record in parts, and save each part before you start the next.

Tidy it up afterwards

Cut the start and end with the MP3 cutter, change the format with the audio converter, or raise a recording that came out too quiet with increase video volume.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record my voice online?
Press Start recording, allow the microphone when your browser asks, and speak. Press Stop recording when you have finished, play the result back, and press Download to save it. Nothing leaves your device.
Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. The recording is made and held in your browser and saved only when you press Download. It is discarded when you press Record again or leave the page.
Which format is the recording saved in?
The format your browser records in, usually WebM or Ogg with Opus in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and M4A in Safari. The page shows the format after you stop. Press Convert to MP3 if you need a file that plays on everything.
How do I save my voice recording as an MP3?
Stop the recording, then press Convert to MP3. The conversion runs in your browser, with a one-time download of the converter engine of about 31 MB, and then a Download MP3 button appears.
Can I pause and carry on recording?
Yes. Pause stops the timer and the recording, and Resume carries on in the same file. The time spent paused is not recorded.
How long can I record?
As long as your device has memory for it, since the recording is held in the browser until you save it. For sessions of an hour or more, record in parts and save each part as you go.
Why is the recording quiet or noisy?
Quiet usually means the microphone is far away or its input volume is low; noise comes from fans, a busy room or a microphone too close to a speaker. Move closer, choose a quiet room, and try the browser's noise suppression option on or off.
Does the voice recorder work on a phone?
Yes, in current mobile browsers on a secure page, once you allow the microphone. Keep the page open and the screen on while you record, because some phones stop recording when the browser goes to the background.
