Mirror a video or flip it upside down
Flipping reverses the picture the way a mirror does. People use it to fix a selfie video where the writing reads backwards, to make the direction of a shot match the clips around it, or to correct a clip that was filmed upside down. Pick the direction, run it, and download a new MP4. The video never leaves your device.
Horizontal, vertical or both
A horizontal flip swaps left and right, so anything that read backwards now reads correctly and anything that read correctly now reads backwards. A vertical flip swaps top and bottom. Doing both at once gives exactly the same picture as turning the clip 180°, so if a video is simply upside down, rotating it gets the same result.
Why some selfie videos come out mirrored
Front cameras are usually shown to you as a mirror while you record, because that feels natural. Whether the saved file keeps the mirror image or the true image depends on the phone and the app. If a sign, a shirt or a screen behind you reads backwards in the saved clip, a horizontal flip puts it right.
What changes and what stays the same
The picture is re-encoded once as H.264 at a high quality setting, because every frame has to be redrawn. The audio is re-encoded as AAC and is not touched otherwise: flipping does not swap the left and right sound channels. Resolution, frame rate and length stay as they were, and the result is an MP4 that starts playing quickly on the web.
Flip, then finish the clip
Flip here, then cut the part you want with the video trimmer, change the pace with the video speed changer, or shrink the file for sharing with the video compressor.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I mirror a video?
- Drop the video into the box, choose Mirror (left to right) and press Flip video. When it finishes, download the new MP4. The original file is left as it was.
- What is the difference between flipping and rotating a video?
- Rotating turns the picture around its centre, like turning a photo on a table, so text stays readable. Flipping mirrors it, so text reads backwards. Flipping both horizontally and vertically gives the same picture as a 180° rotation.
- Why is the text in my selfie video backwards?
- Front cameras are shown as a mirror while you film, and some phones and apps save that mirror image rather than the true one. Flipping the clip horizontally turns the writing the right way round again.
- Should I flip horizontally or vertically?
- Choose horizontal to swap left and right, which is what most people mean by mirroring. Choose vertical when the picture is upside down but left and right are correct. If the clip is both mirrored and upside down, choose both.
- Does flipping a video change the sound?
- No. The sound is carried over as it was, and the left and right audio channels are not swapped. Only the picture is mirrored.
- Does flipping reduce video quality?
- The picture is re-encoded once at a high quality setting, which is hard to see by eye. Resolution, frame rate and duration are unchanged, and the sound is carried over.
- Can I flip only part of a video?
- The whole video is flipped. To flip a section, cut it out first with the video trimmer, flip that clip here, and join the pieces in an editor.
- Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
- Nothing is uploaded. The video is flipped inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine itself is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many clips you flip.
