Play a clip backwards, frame by frame

A reversed clip makes spilled water leap back into the glass, a jump lands before it starts and a wave pulls back out of the sand. This tool plays your video backwards from its last frame to its first, and can reverse the sound too. It is built for short clips and runs entirely on your device.

Why only short clips

To play a clip backwards, the tool has to hold every frame in memory at once, because the last frame must be ready before the first can be written. At 30 frames per second, 12 seconds of 720p is 360 frames of about 1.4 MB each, which comes to roughly half a gigabyte. The limits are chosen to stay near that figure: 12 seconds at 720p, 30 seconds at 480p and 50 seconds at 360p.

Getting a longer clip through

If your clip is too long, cut the part you want with the video trimmer first, or choose a smaller picture size. A few seconds is usually all a reversed effect needs, and shorter clips also finish faster.

What happens to the sound

With the sound option on, the audio is reversed along with the picture. Reversed speech turns into unrecognisable babble, and reversed music loses the attack of each note. For most clips a silent reversed video looks better, so untick the box if the sound does not matter.

Make a boomerang or a loop

A clip that plays forward and then backwards loops without a jump. Make the reversed version here, then join it to the original in an editor, or repeat a reversed clip with loop video. To turn the result into a looping image, use the video to GIF converter.

Frequently asked questions

How do I reverse a video?
Drop a short clip into the box, choose a size and press Reverse video. The tool plays the clip from its last frame to its first and makes a new MP4 for you to download.
Why is there a limit on how long the clip can be?
Reversing needs every frame held in memory at once. At 720p that is about half a gigabyte for 12 seconds, and the limits at 480p (30 seconds) and 360p (50 seconds) stay near the same amount, so a browser can finish the job.
My video is longer than the limit. What can I do?
Cut the section you want with the video trimmer, then reverse that piece, or pick a smaller size to raise the limit. A reversed effect usually needs only a few seconds.
Does the sound play backwards too?
Yes, by default. Untick Reverse the sound too to get a silent video. Reversed speech cannot be understood, so most reversed clips look better without sound.
Can I reverse a video and keep the sound playing forwards?
Not in this tool, which reverses the sound or removes it. To keep the original sound, reverse the picture here and add the sound back in an editor.
How do I make a video play forwards and then backwards?
Reverse the clip here, then place the original and the reversed copy one after the other in a video editor. The loop video tool can repeat the result as many times as you like.
Does reversing reduce the quality?
The video is re-encoded once at a good quality setting, and it is scaled down if it is larger than the size you picked. The frame rate is unchanged.
Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The clip is reversed in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many clips you reverse.
