Keep only the part of the picture you want

Cropping cuts away the edges of the picture and keeps a rectangle. Use it to remove a black border, to cut something out at the edge of the frame, or to turn a landscape clip into a square or vertical one centred on the action. Drag the box over the part to keep and download the new video. It runs on your device and nothing is uploaded.

How the crop box works

Choose a video and a box appears on top of it. Drag the box to move it and a corner to resize it, or pick a shape such as 1:1 or 9:16 to lock the box to that shape. The size in pixels and the position of the box are shown under the video. Sizes are kept to even numbers, because video needs them.

Crop or change the aspect ratio?

Cropping removes part of the picture for good and does not rescale what is left: a 1920 × 1080 clip cropped to a square keeps 1080 × 1080 pixels with the sides cut away. If you want the whole picture to fit inside a new shape instead, use change video aspect ratio, which can add a blurred background or bars instead of cutting.

Common crops

Square (1:1) suits feed posts, 9:16 suits full-screen vertical formats, 4:5 suits tall portrait posts, and 16:9 suits widescreen. To remove a black border around a picture, leave the shape on Free and fit the box to the picture inside the border, which is a quick fix for clips that were recorded with bars baked in.

Then finish the clip

Shrink the cropped video for sharing with the video compressor, cut it to length with the video trimmer, or make the picture smaller with change video resolution. If the clip is sideways, rotate it before you crop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I crop a video?
Drop the video into the box. A crop box appears over the picture. Drag it to the part you want to keep, drag a corner to resize it, and press Crop video. The tool makes a new MP4 containing only what was inside the box.
How do I crop a video to a square?
Choose 1:1 under Shape of the crop. The box becomes the biggest square that fits the picture, centred. Drag it left, right, up or down to frame what you want, then press Crop video.
How do I crop a video to 9:16 for Reels, Shorts or TikTok?
Choose 9:16. The box becomes a tall, narrow rectangle, and you slide it sideways to follow the action. Cropping keeps the original pixels, so a 1920 × 1080 clip gives a vertical video of about 608 × 1080. To keep the whole picture instead, use change video aspect ratio.
Does cropping reduce the video quality?
The picture is re-encoded once at a high quality setting, and nothing is rescaled, so every pixel inside the box keeps its original sharpness. The result is smaller in pixels because part of the picture was cut away.
What is the difference between cropping and resizing a video?
Cropping cuts away the edges and keeps the rest at its original pixel size. Resizing keeps the whole picture and changes how many pixels it has. Use change video resolution to resize.
Can I crop black bars off a video?
Yes. Leave the shape on Free and drag the box so it covers only the picture inside the black bars, using the corners to match its edges. Then crop.
Why is the cropped size slightly different from the box I drew?
Video needs even pixel sizes, so the box snaps to even numbers. The size and position shown under the video are the exact values used.
Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
Nothing is uploaded. The video is cropped in your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many videos you crop.
