Record yourself and keep the file on your own device

Press Start recording, allow the camera and, if you want sound, the microphone. You see yourself live, can pause and resume, and when you stop you can play the video back before saving it. The recording is made in your browser and is never uploaded.

Before you record

Check the camera first with the webcam test: it shows the picture, the real resolution and the frame rate. Put a light in front of you rather than behind you, set the camera at eye level, and look at the lens rather than at yourself on the screen. Close other apps that use the camera, because most cameras can serve only one program at a time.

Picture size and file size

Choose 480p, 720p or 1080p. A bigger picture looks sharper and makes a bigger file, and the camera supplies the closest size it supports, which can be smaller than the one you pick. The size readout shows how large the recording has grown while you record. For messages and email, 720p is usually plenty.

WebM or MP4

Chrome, Edge and Firefox record WebM, and Safari records MP4. WebM plays in browsers and many players but not in every editor or on every phone. Press Convert to MP4 for the most widely accepted file; it re-encodes the video on your device after a one-time download of the converter engine, so it takes some time on long recordings.

After recording

Cut the start and end with the video trimmer, make the file smaller for sharing with the video compressor, or change the format with the video converter. If you want to record what is on your screen instead of the camera, use the online screen recorder.

Frequently asked questions

How do I record a video with my webcam online?
Press Start recording, allow the camera (and the microphone if you want sound), and press Stop recording when you have finished. Play the video back, then press Download to save it.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The video is recorded and held in your browser, and it is saved only when you press Download. Nothing is sent to a server.
Can I record without sound?
Yes. Untick Record sound from my microphone before you start and the video is recorded without audio.
What format is the recording saved in?
WebM in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and MP4 in Safari. Press Convert to MP4 if you need an MP4 from a WebM recording, for an editor or a phone.
Which picture size should I choose?
720p suits most uses and keeps the file moderate. Choose 1080p for the sharpest picture if your camera supports it, and 480p for a small file. The browser asks the camera for the closest size it can supply.
Can I pause the recording?
Yes. Pause stops the recording and the timer, and Resume carries on in the same video. The time paused is not recorded.
Why does the camera not start?
Allow the camera for this site in the address bar, open any privacy shutter, and close apps and tabs that may be using the camera. The webcam test page can help you find out whether the camera works at all.
Does the webcam recorder work on a phone?
Yes, in current mobile browsers on a secure page. Keep the page open and the screen on while you record, since some phones stop recording when the browser goes to the background.
