Fix a sideways phone video in one step
A clip that plays on its side or upside down is almost always a rotation problem, not a broken file. This tool turns the picture a quarter turn either way, or a half turn, and saves a new copy with the correct orientation built in. It runs on your own device, so the video is never uploaded.
Which way to rotate
Look at where the top of the picture points. If the top points to the left, rotate 90° clockwise to stand it upright. If the top points to the right, rotate 90° counter-clockwise. If the whole scene is upside down, choose 180°. A quarter turn swaps the width and the height, so a 1920 × 1080 landscape clip becomes 1080 × 1920 portrait and the other way round.
Why a video looks right on your phone and sideways elsewhere
Phones usually record in the sensor's landscape direction and store a small rotation flag in the file that says how to display it. Your phone honours the flag, but some editors, older players and upload forms ignore it, so the same file shows up sideways. Rotating here applies the orientation to the picture itself, so every player agrees.
What happens to the file
The picture is re-encoded once as H.264 at a high quality setting and the audio is re-encoded as AAC, then packed into an MP4 that starts playing quickly on the web. Because the picture has to be redrawn to turn it, rotation cannot be done as a pure copy. Resolution and frame rate stay the same apart from the width and height swap.
Rotate first, then finish the job
Turn the clip here, then cut the part you need with the video trimmer, shrink it with the video compressor for sharing, or change the container with the video converter. If the picture is the wrong way round like a mirror rather than turned, use flip video instead.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I rotate a video that plays sideways?
- Drop the video into the box, choose the rotation that stands the picture upright (90° clockwise if the top points left, 90° counter-clockwise if it points right, 180° if it is upside down) and press Rotate video. When it finishes, download the new MP4. The original file is never changed.
- Why does my video look sideways on some devices and fine on others?
- Many phones save the video unrotated and add a flag that tells players to turn it for display. Players that read the flag show it correctly and players that ignore it show it sideways. Rotating the video here writes the correct orientation into the picture so the flag no longer matters.
- Does rotating a video reduce its quality?
- It is re-encoded once, at a high quality setting, because every frame has to be redrawn at the new angle. A single re-encode at this setting is hard to see by eye. The size and frame rate stay as they were, apart from width and height swapping on a quarter turn.
- What happens to the width and height when I rotate 90°?
- They swap. A 1920 × 1080 landscape video becomes 1080 × 1920 after a quarter turn, and a 1080 × 1920 portrait video becomes 1920 × 1080. A 180° turn keeps the size and only turns the picture upside down.
- Can I rotate a video by any angle, such as 45°?
- No. This tool does quarter turns and half turns only, because turning by an in-between angle leaves empty triangles in the corners that would have to be cropped or filled. For a tilted horizon, rotate to the nearest quarter turn here and crop the rest in an editor.
- Is the sound kept?
- Yes. The audio is carried over and re-encoded as AAC so the result plays everywhere. Nothing is cut, muted or shifted against the picture.
- Is my video uploaded, and is it free?
- Nothing is uploaded. The rotation runs inside your browser using a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine itself is downloaded the first time. It is free, with no watermark, no account and no limit on how many videos you rotate.
- What is the difference between rotating and flipping a video?
- Rotating turns the whole picture around its centre, like turning a photo on a table. Flipping mirrors it, like looking at it in a mirror, so text reads backwards. Flipping both ways at once gives the same picture as a 180° rotation. To mirror a clip, use the flip video tool on this site.
