Convert MOV to MP3 without uploading your video

Sometimes you only want the sound of a video: a recorded lecture, a voice note filmed by accident, a song from a clip. A MOV from an iPhone or Mac holds the sound along with the picture. This converter drops the picture and gives you the audio as an MP3.

What you get

The sound of the first audio track in the MOV is converted to MP3 at the bitrate you choose, and the picture is left out. A one-minute clip at 192 kbps gives an MP3 of about 1.4 MB, whatever size the video was, so it is also a quick way to send just the audio.

Choosing a bitrate

For speech, such as lectures, interviews and voice notes, 128 kbps is plenty, and mixing down to mono halves the file again. For music from a video, use 192 kbps or 256 kbps. The sound in an iPhone video is already compressed as AAC, so converting it to MP3 cannot improve it; a higher bitrate only avoids losing more.

Cutting and cleaning up

If you need only part of the sound, cut the video first with the video trimmer, or cut the MP3 afterwards with the MP3 cutter. If the sound is quiet, raise the volume of the video with increase video volume before extracting it.

How this converter works

Converting MOV to MP3 takes the sound out of the video and encodes it as MP3. The picture is dropped, and only the first audio track is used. Choose a bitrate: 192 kbps is a good balance, and 320 kbps is the highest quality MP3 allows.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MOV to MP3?
Drop your MOV file into the box above, or click to choose it, pick a bitrate and press Convert to MP3. When it finishes, press Download. The conversion runs in your browser, so the video stays on your device.
Is my video uploaded when I convert it?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine itself, about 31 MB, is downloaded, once. Your MOV file never leaves your device, and there is no watermark and no account.
Will converting MOV to MP3 reduce the quality?
Quality can only stay the same or drop. Both MOV and MP3 are lossy, so converting compresses the sound a second time. Choose a bitrate at or above the original's to lose as little as possible.
What is a MOV file?
MOV is Apple's QuickTime container, and it is what iPhones, iPads and Macs record in. It usually holds H.264 or HEVC video with AAC sound, and it plays natively on Apple devices, while many Windows and Android apps and some websites refuse it.
What is MP3?
MP3 is the most widely supported audio format. It is lossy, meaning it discards sound you are unlikely to miss in order to make small files, and it plays on every phone, computer, car stereo and browser.
Does converting MOV to MP3 keep the video?
No. The picture is left out and only the sound is kept, as an MP3. If you want to keep the video as well, convert it to MP4 instead.
My MOV has no sound in the MP3. Why?
Either the video has no audio track, as with some screen recordings, or its sound is in a form this converter cannot read. Play the MOV first to check it has sound.
