Convert MP3 to WAV without uploading your audio file

Some audio editors, hardware samplers, phone systems and old players want WAV, not MP3. This converter decodes an MP3 into an uncompressed WAV file. It is useful for compatibility, but it does not bring back sound the MP3 discarded.

What converting to WAV does and does not do

A WAV is uncompressed, so it holds the MP3's sound as it is, exactly as the MP3 plays it. It cannot restore detail that the MP3 had already thrown away, so the WAV will sound identical to the MP3 and not better. The point is the format: editors and equipment that read only WAV can now open the file.

How big the WAV will be

A WAV is much bigger than the MP3 it came from. A minute of CD-quality stereo is about 10.6 MB, against 1.44 MB for an MP3 at 192 kbps, so expect the file to grow to about seven times its size. There is no bitrate to choose, because WAV is not compressed.

When to use it

Convert to WAV before editing in a program that works best with uncompressed audio, before loading sound into a sampler or phone system, or when a platform insists on WAV. For everyday listening, the MP3 is smaller and sounds the same, so there is no reason to keep both. To trim the file first, use the MP3 cutter.

How this converter works

WAV is lossless, so the conversion keeps all of the sound in the MP3 file. There is no bitrate to choose, and the file is usually bigger than the lossy original.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert MP3 to WAV?
Drop your MP3 file into the box above, or click to choose it, check the settings and press Convert to WAV. When it finishes, press Download. The conversion runs in your browser, so the audio file stays on your device.
Is my audio file uploaded when I convert it?
No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine itself, about 31 MB, is downloaded, once. Your MP3 file never leaves your device, and there is no watermark and no account.
Will converting MP3 to WAV reduce the quality?
No further loss. WAV keeps everything in the MP3 file exactly. It cannot bring back detail that a lossy source had already thrown away, so converting a lossy file to WAV only makes it bigger.
What is a MP3 file?
MP3 is the most widely supported audio format. It is lossy, meaning it discards sound you are unlikely to miss in order to make small files, and it plays on every phone, computer, car stereo and browser.
What is WAV?
WAV is uncompressed audio from Microsoft and IBM. It keeps every detail of a recording, which is why editors and studios use it, and why the files are large: CD-quality stereo takes about 10.6 MB a minute.
Will converting an MP3 to WAV improve the sound?
No. The WAV holds exactly what the MP3 plays. The MP3 discarded some detail when it was made, and that cannot be recovered. WAV only changes the file type.
Why is the WAV so much bigger than the MP3?
Because a WAV is not compressed. Uncompressed CD-quality stereo needs about 10.6 MB a minute, whereas an MP3 at 192 kbps needs about 1.44 MB.
