Convert FLAC to MP3 without uploading your audio file
FLAC is the choice for keeping music without loss, but not every phone, car stereo and player can play it, and the files are several times bigger than MP3. This converter makes MP3 copies of your FLAC files for everyday listening, while you keep the FLAC originals untouched.
Keep the FLAC, make an MP3 copy
FLAC can be restored exactly, and an MP3 cannot, so treat the FLAC as the master and the MP3 as a copy for devices. Converting leaves your FLAC file as it was. If you ever need a different bitrate, convert the FLAC again rather than the MP3, which would lose more.
How big the MP3 will be
An MP3 at 192 kbps takes 1.44 MB a minute and at 320 kbps takes 2.40 MB. CD-quality FLAC is usually somewhere around half the size of an uncompressed WAV, which is about 10.6 MB a minute, so MP3 files are commonly three to seven times smaller than the FLAC they came from.
Choosing the bitrate
320 kbps is the highest quality an MP3 can have and is the right choice when quality matters. 192 kbps is hard to distinguish from the FLAC on ordinary headphones and speakers and keeps files small. 128 kbps suits speech. Tags such as artist and title are not carried into the MP3 by this converter, so re-tag the file if you need them.
How this converter works
The sound is decoded from the FLAC file and encoded as MP3 at the bitrate you choose. 192 kbps is a good balance of quality and size, and mixing down to mono halves the data for speech.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert FLAC to MP3?
- Drop your FLAC file into the box above, or click to choose it, pick a bitrate and press Convert to MP3. When it finishes, press Download. The conversion runs in your browser, so the audio file stays on your device.
- Is my audio file uploaded when I convert it?
- No. The conversion runs inside your browser with a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and only the engine itself, about 31 MB, is downloaded, once. Your FLAC file never leaves your device, and there is no watermark and no account.
- Will converting FLAC to MP3 reduce the quality?
- A little, as with any MP3 file. MP3 is lossy, so it discards sound you are unlikely to hear to make the file smaller. At 192 kbps or more the difference from the FLAC is very hard to hear.
- What is a FLAC file?
- FLAC is lossless compression: it makes audio files smaller than WAV without throwing any sound away, and the original can be restored exactly. It is popular for music collections, but fewer phones and car stereos play it than MP3.
- What is MP3?
- MP3 is the most widely supported audio format. It is lossy, meaning it discards sound you are unlikely to miss in order to make small files, and it plays on every phone, computer, car stereo and browser.
- Is there any quality loss going from FLAC to MP3?
- Yes, a little. MP3 is lossy and discards sound that is unlikely to be heard. At 320 kbps the loss is very hard to hear, and at 192 kbps most listeners cannot tell the difference on ordinary equipment.
- Will the artist and title tags come across?
- This converter does not carry the tags across, so the MP3 will have no artist or title. You can add them afterwards with any tagging program.
