Why people switch from Smallpdf

Smallpdf is a well-established product and a good choice for many people. Its support page says free users can process up to 2 conversions a day, with paid plans for more, and that most of its tools process your file on its servers and delete it after an hour. For most users that is fine. For personal records, contracts or company internals, a browser-based alternative keeps the file on your device. This page is an independent comparison, last checked against Smallpdf's own pages on 15 October 2026; Stax is not affiliated with Smallpdf.

The privacy difference, illustrated

Open Chrome DevTools → Network tab and watch the requests while you compress a PDF with each tool. On Stax you will see page files load and some requests to analytics and advertising scripts (the privacy page lists them), but no request carries the PDF. Filter for POST requests to see this quickly. The check takes about 30 seconds and applies to every Stax PDF tool. Check how any tool handles files by reading its own privacy documentation as well as the Network tab.

What Smallpdf does that Stax doesn't (yet)

OCR on scanned PDFs, PDF↔Word conversion, e-signature tools, PDF sharing and team plans. Stax does not offer these. If you need them today, Smallpdf or Adobe Acrobat are the right tools.

Who switches from Smallpdf to Stax

Freelancers invoicing clients monthly compress and combine PDF invoices before emailing, a job that can hit a free plan's daily task limit during month-end billing. Legal professionals handling confidential NDAs and employment contracts need to compress and split documents but cannot risk uploading them to a third-party server even temporarily. Indian CAs and tax consultants merge multiple ITR documents, Form 16 copies, and bank statements into single PDFs for their clients, a workflow that needs many tasks a day and where some firms prefer files never leave the machine. Developers and SaaS teams with internal documentation workflows need to compress release notes and product specs without corporate data leaving the local machine.

PDF compression quality — what to expect

Stax PDF Compressor works toward a size you choose, such as 100 KB, 200 KB or 1 MB. It first re-saves the file without losing anything, which usually trims only a little from text-based PDFs. If that does not reach your target, it redraws each page as an image at a lower resolution until the file fits. That can shrink a scanned PDF a lot, but the text becomes part of a picture and can no longer be selected or searched, so keep the original. The tool tells you whether it reached the size. Smallpdf compresses most files on its servers, so the file is uploaded; here the work happens on your own device, so the time depends on your computer and the size of the file.

Tips for getting the most from browser-based PDF tools

When merging many large PDFs, close other browser tabs first to leave the tab more memory, and try a smaller batch if a job fails. When splitting a large PDF, enter the page ranges you need (for example 1-5, 6-12, 13-20) in one go. If compression doesn't reduce the size much, the PDF probably already uses compressed images; try the PDF splitter to keep only the pages you need instead.

Frequently asked questions

Why look for a Smallpdf alternative?
The two most common reasons: privacy (it says most of its tools process files on its servers, and that files are deleted after one hour) and the free limit (its support page says non-registered and free users can process up to 2 conversions a day, with paid plans for more; check its pricing page for the current terms). Stax PDF tools run entirely in your browser using pdf-lib, with no uploads, no daily limit and no sign-up.
Are browser-based PDF tools as fast as Smallpdf?
For everyday files, yes in practice: nothing is uploaded or downloaded, so merging, splitting, rotating and watermarking usually take a few seconds. Speed depends on your device, and very large files (100 MB or more) can run into your browser's memory limits, where a server with dedicated hardware may cope better.
Which PDF tools does Stax cover?
Eight: PDF Compressor, PDF Merger, PDF Splitter, PDF Rotate, PDF Watermark, PDF Page Numbers, PDF Page Info, and Image-to-PDF. Smallpdf covers more (PDF↔Word, OCR, e-signature); Stax does not offer those.
What's the catch?
No catch on privacy or price. PDF processing in the browser is well supported through pdf-lib and PDF.js, Mozilla's open-source PDF engine. The limits are on features: no OCR, PDF-to-Word, e-signatures, password protection or reordering pages inside one PDF yet, and the compressor trades text for page images when a very small size is requested (see the compression section).
Does Stax support PDF/A archival format?
No. Stax does not produce PDF/A files, and it does not check or convert a PDF to that standard. For archival-grade exports use a tool that states PDF/A support, such as Adobe Acrobat or LibreOffice.
