Rotate PDF pages — fix orientation for all pages or selected pages

Scanned documents often come out sideways or upside down. PDFs created from mixed-orientation source files — some pages landscape, others portrait — need selective rotation to display correctly. This free PDF rotation tool lets you rotate all pages at once or specify exactly which pages to rotate, in which direction. All processing happens in your browser with pdf-lib, so your files stay on your device.

Rotating all pages vs selected pages

Most PDF rotation tools only offer bulk rotation — useful when all pages are consistently rotated the wrong way (a common scanner issue). But many real-world documents are more complex: a report where appendix pages are landscape while the main content is portrait, a contract where pages 3 and 7 were scanned upside down, or a combined PDF where different source documents had different orientations. This tool lets you specify page numbers or ranges (e.g. "2, 4-6, 9") and choose the rotation direction independently for each selection.

Three rotation options

90° clockwise turns a landscape page to portrait (rotate right). 90° counterclockwise turns a landscape page to portrait (rotate left). 180° flips a page completely upside down — useful for pages that were scanned from the bottom. The rotation is permanent in the saved PDF, meaning viewers on any device or platform will see the corrected orientation without having to manually rotate their view.

Why scanned PDFs are often rotated wrong

Flatbed scanners and document feeders can pick up pages in different orientations depending on how documents are placed. Many scanners have auto-rotation features, but they rely on text detection to determine orientation — they fail on blank pages, pages with only images, and pages with vertical text. Smartphones scanning documents sometimes have incorrect orientation metadata. If your PDF viewer shows a page sideways, rotating and saving a corrected copy is the most reliable fix.

Does rotation affect PDF text or links?

PDF rotation is a presentation instruction — the page content (text, images, vector graphics, hyperlinks) is not re-rendered. Text remains selectable and searchable, hyperlinks continue to work, and image quality is not affected. The PDF file size barely changes after rotation since only orientation metadata is updated, not the page content itself.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rotate only some pages in a PDF?
Select 'Specific pages' mode and enter the page numbers you want to rotate, separated by commas or as ranges — for example, '1, 3' or '2-5'. Only those pages will be rotated by the chosen angle; all other pages remain at their original orientation. This is useful for fixing a single landscape page in an otherwise portrait document.
Can I rotate pages in different directions?
Each run of the tool applies one rotation angle to all targeted pages. To rotate different pages by different amounts, run the tool in two passes: first for the pages needing 90 degrees, download the result, re-upload it, and then apply 270 degrees to the remaining pages. This two-pass workflow handles mixed orientations in the same document.
Why are some scanned PDFs not displaying correctly?
Scanners sometimes embed pages at 90 or 180 degrees relative to how they were placed on the glass. The scanned content looks sideways or upside-down in PDF viewers. Use this tool to correct the orientation by rotating the affected pages. Rotating by 270 degrees is equivalent to rotating 90 degrees counter-clockwise, which fixes pages that appear rotated the wrong way after a 90-degree correction.
