Zip files and folders on your own device
Zipping puts many files into one, usually smaller, file that is easy to attach, send or store. Drop your files here, or add a whole folder, choose a name and press Create ZIP. The archive is built in your browser, so your files are never uploaded, which matters for contracts, photos and anything private. The result is a standard ZIP that Windows, macOS and phones can open.
Files, folders and names
Add files with the button or by dropping them, and add a folder with Add a folder to keep its structure: a photo in the holiday folder stays in holiday inside the ZIP. Not every phone browser offers folder choice, so on a phone add the files themselves. If two files would end up with the same name, the second becomes name (2), so nothing is overwritten. You can remove any file from the list before you create the ZIP, and each file keeps its last-modified date.
Compression level
Balanced is the usual choice. Fast saves time on large sets, Smallest takes longer for a slightly smaller result, and Store only puts the files in without compressing them. Files that are already compressed, such as JPG, PNG, MP4, PDF, DOCX and other ZIPs, are stored as they are whatever you choose, because squeezing them again takes time and saves almost nothing. Text, CSV, JSON, code and spreadsheets are where compression pays off. The result shows how much smaller the ZIP is.
What this does not do
It does not add a password: a ZIP made here is not encrypted, so use a tool such as 7-Zip when you need that. The most it zips at once is 1,024 MB, because the files are held in memory while they are compressed. It makes ZIP files only, not RAR or 7z. To look inside a ZIP afterwards, or to unpack one you received, use unzip files online. For a set of dummy files to put in one, use the test file generator.
Before you send it
A ZIP of large photos will not be much smaller than the photos, so shrink them first with the image compressor, and compress PDFs with the PDF compressor or join them with the PDF merger when one file is easier than several.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I zip files without installing anything?
- Drop your files into the box, or press Add files, choose a name for the ZIP and a compression level, and press Create ZIP. When it finishes, press the download button. It all happens in your browser, and Windows, macOS and phones can open the result.
- Can I zip a whole folder and keep its structure?
- Yes, with Add a folder, on browsers that offer folder choice, which includes current desktop Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The folder's own subfolders and file names are kept inside the ZIP. Some phone browsers only let you choose files, in which case add the files individually.
- Why is my ZIP not much smaller than the files?
- Photos, videos, PDFs, Office documents and other ZIPs are already compressed, so a ZIP cannot shrink them much: they are stored as they are, and the benefit is having one file instead of many. Text, CSV, JSON, logs and source code usually shrink a lot.
- Which compression level should I choose?
- Balanced, unless you have a reason not to. Fast is for very large sets when time matters, Smallest squeezes a little more at the cost of time, and Store only skips compression entirely, which is useful when you only need a single bundle of already-compressed files.
- Can I put a password on the ZIP?
- No. ZIP files made here are not encrypted. If a file is sensitive, use an archive program that supports strong encryption, such as 7-Zip, rather than a password that only some ZIP programs honour.
- How much can I zip at once?
- Up to 1,024 MB in total, because the files are held in your browser's memory while they are read and compressed. Past about 300 MB the page warns you, and on a phone or an older laptop it is better to zip fewer files at a time and close other tabs.
- Are the file names and dates kept?
- Yes. Each file keeps its name, including letters from other languages, and its last-modified date. Folder paths are kept when you use Add a folder. Two files with the same name get (2), (3) and so on added so neither is lost.
- Is anything uploaded, and is it free?
- Nothing is uploaded: the files are read and zipped inside your browser with the open-source fflate library. It is free, with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many ZIPs you make.
