Open a ZIP or GZ file without installing anything
Choose a ZIP or GZ file and this tool lists what is inside it, with sizes and dates, then lets you save any single file or all of them. It all runs in your browser, so the archive is never uploaded, which is the safe way to open a ZIP from an email or a download you do not fully trust. No password prompt, no account and nothing to install.
Look first, then save what you need
The list is read from the archive's own directory, so a large ZIP appears at once and nothing is unpacked until you ask. Each file has a Save button, and Save all downloads every file one after another. Folders are shown too, with the full path of each file. A filter box finds a file by name in a long list, and the first 500 matches are shown at a time. Each file is saved by its own name, without its folders, so two files that share a name in different folders both download under it and the browser numbers the second.
ZIP and GZ only, and no passwords
This opens .zip files, and .gz files, which hold a single compressed file such as a log or a data export. It does not open RAR, 7z or TAR files. A ZIP whose files are password protected is recognised and marked locked, but the tool cannot enter a password, so it cannot open them. A damaged or cut-short ZIP is reported as such, rather than producing broken files.
Safe limits
A small ZIP can hide a huge file, so the tool shows each file's unpacked size before you save it and refuses a single file larger than 1,024 MB. An archive larger than 1,024 MB is refused at the start, because the whole archive is held in memory. Paths inside the archive are never used to write anywhere: files are only ever offered as ordinary downloads. For a ZIP you want to check, the hash generator gives the fingerprint to compare with the one the sender published.
Going the other way
To make a ZIP, use zip files online. To split a PDF you found inside an archive, use the PDF splitter, and to build a set of dummy files to put in a ZIP for testing, use the test file generator.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I open a ZIP file without installing software?
- Drop the ZIP onto the box or press it to choose the file. The list of files appears straight away. Press Save beside a file, or Save all to download every file. The archive stays on your device throughout.
- Can it open a password-protected ZIP?
- No. It recognises when files are password protected and marks them locked, but it cannot enter a password. Use an archive program such as 7-Zip for those, or ask the sender for an unprotected copy.
- Which archive types can it open?
- ZIP files and GZ (gzip) files. A GZ holds one compressed file, usually named like report.csv.gz, and unpacking it gives report.csv. RAR, 7z, TAR and other archive types are not supported here.
- Does it keep the folder structure?
- The list shows the full path of every file and marks the folders. When you save a file, though, it is downloaded under its own name without its folders, because a browser can only save single files. Two files with the same name in different folders both download under that name.
- Is it safe to open a ZIP I got from an email?
- Opening it here is safer than opening it on your computer's desktop, because nothing is run and nothing is uploaded: the contents are only listed and saved as ordinary downloads. What is inside can still be harmful, so do not open a program or document from a sender you do not trust, whatever opened the ZIP.
- How big a ZIP can it open?
- Up to 1,024 MB for the archive, and up to 1,024 MB for any single file inside it, because the archive is held in your browser's memory. A bigger one is refused with a message rather than crashing the page. On a phone or an older laptop, very large archives may need a desktop program.
- Why is a date missing, or shown as empty?
- Some ZIP files store no date for a file, and the very large ZIP64 format is listed without dates. The file itself is unaffected. Dates shown are in your own time zone.
- Is the ZIP uploaded, and does it cost anything?
- Nothing is uploaded. The archive is read and unpacked inside your browser using the open-source fflate library. It is free, with no account and no limit on how many you open.
