₹13 LPA is the most misunderstood salary in India right now: the first band past the ₹12 lakh tax-free ceiling, where everyone expects a brutal tax bill — and where Section 87A marginal relief quietly caps it at a fraction of the slab math. It's also, almost exactly, the ₹1-lakh-a-month salary. Here's the truth in numbers.

13 LPA: the full breakdown, both regimes

New regime (no deductions)Annual
Gross CTC₹13,00,000
Standard deduction−₹75,000
Taxable income₹12,25,000
Income tax (incl. surcharge + cess)−₹26,000
Employee EPF (12% of basic)−₹78,000
Professional tax−₹2,400
Annual in-hand₹11,93,600
Monthly in-hand₹99,467
Old regime (no deductions claimed)Annual
Gross CTC₹13,00,000
Standard deduction−₹50,000
Taxable income₹12,50,000
Income tax (incl. surcharge + cess)−₹1,95,000
Employee EPF (12% of basic)−₹78,000
Professional tax−₹2,400
Annual in-hand₹10,24,600
Monthly in-hand₹85,383

With no deductions beyond the standard deduction, the new regime leaves you ₹14,083 more in hand every month at ₹13 LPA (that is ₹1,69,000 a year).

The one number that decides your regime at ₹13 LPA: you would need to claim roughly ₹6,88,000 in old-regime deductions (80C, 80D, home-loan interest, HRA exemption combined — beyond the standard deduction) before the old regime beats the new one. Claiming less than that? The new regime wins.

Assumptions: full CTC treated as taxable salary, basic = 50% of CTC, employee EPF = 12% of basic, professional tax ₹2,400/year, standard deduction applied. FY 2026-27 slab rates.

The ₹26,000 surprise: marginal relief explained

Run the slabs on ₹13 LPA (taxable ₹12.25 lakh) and you get ₹63,750 of tax — but that's not what you pay. Marginal relief caps the tax at the amount by which taxable income exceeds ₹12 lakh: ₹25,000, plus 4% cess, so ₹26,000 total. The provision exists so that crossing the rebate ceiling can never leave you worse off than someone at ₹12 lakh. Most online calculators still get this wrong; the tables above compute it correctly.

The ₹1 lakh/month milestone — nearly

After the capped tax, EPF, and professional tax, ₹13 LPA lands within a whisker of ₹1,00,000 a month in hand — the cleanest psychological milestone in Indian salaries. It's worth knowing what gets you decisively past it: ₹13.5–14 LPA in cash terms, or the same ₹13 LPA with employer NPS routed under 80CCD(2), which trims taxable income at your highest rate while building retirement corpus on the side.

Where relief ends and normal slabs resume

Marginal relief fades fast: by roughly ₹13.45 LPA CTC (₹12.7 lakh taxable) the capped amount equals the slab math and normal taxation resumes — the 14 LPA page shows the post-relief picture. Practically, the entire ₹12.75–13.5 LPA corridor is a gentle on-ramp, not a cliff. If you're negotiating in this corridor, negotiate on gross without fear; the system is built so the raise always wins.

Frequently asked questions

What is the in-hand salary for ₹13 LPA in FY 2026-27?
Under the new tax regime, a ₹13 LPA CTC works out to roughly ₹99,467 per month (₹11,93,600 a year) after income tax, 12%-of-basic employee EPF, and professional tax, assuming basic pay is 50% of CTC.
Which tax regime is better at ₹13 LPA?
With no deductions beyond the standard deduction, the new regime leaves ₹14,083 more per month in hand at ₹13 LPA. The old regime only catches up if your claimed deductions reach the break-even figure shown on this page.
How much tax do I actually pay on ₹13 LPA in FY 2026-27?
Only about ₹26,000 for the year (₹25,000 tax + 4% cess) under the new regime, thanks to Section 87A marginal relief — not the ₹66,000+ that plain slab arithmetic suggests. Relief caps tax at the amount your taxable income (₹12.25 lakh after standard deduction) exceeds ₹12 lakh.
Is ₹13 LPA a ₹1 lakh per month salary?
Almost exactly: with the marginal-relief tax of ~₹26,000/year, standard EPF, and professional tax, monthly in-hand computes to roughly ₹99,000–₹99,500 on a 50%-basic structure. A slightly lower basic percentage or an employer that picks up professional tax tips it over the ₹1 lakh line.
