Turning an hourly wage into a yearly salary
Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week and by the weeks you are paid. For a full-time year that is 2,080 hours (40 hours × 52 weeks), the figure the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses to convert an hourly wage into an annual one. To go the other way, divide the salary by the hours you actually work in a year.

Part-time hours and unpaid time off
Annual pay scales with hours. At $18.50 an hour, 32 hours a week for 52 weeks comes to $30,784, against $38,480 at 40 hours. Weeks you are not paid at all, such as unpaid leave, reduce the paid weeks: $25 an hour at 40 hours for 50 paid weeks is $50,000, not $52,000. Paid vacation and paid holidays are paid time, so leave the unpaid weeks at 0 for them.
Biweekly or semi-monthly?
Biweekly pay is 26 paychecks a year, one every two weeks, so each is the annual amount divided by 26. Semi-monthly is 24 paychecks, two a month, each the annual amount divided by 24. The annual total is the same, but a biweekly paycheck is a little smaller, and two months a year contain a third biweekly payday.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I convert an hourly wage to an annual salary?
- Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work each week and by the weeks you are paid. For a full-time year that is hourly rate × 40 × 52, or hourly rate × 2,080 hours, the figure the Bureau of Labor Statistics uses to turn an hourly wage into an annual one. At $25 an hour that is $52,000 a year, $4,333.33 a month, $2,000 every two weeks and $1,000 a week.
- How do I convert a salary to an hourly rate?
- Divide the annual salary by the hours you work in a year. At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks that is 2,080 hours, so a $52,000 salary is $25.00 an hour and a $50,000 salary is $24.04 an hour. If you work fewer hours the hourly rate is higher: $75,000 for 37.5 hours a week (1,950 hours a year) is $38.46 an hour.
- What is $40 an hour as a yearly salary?
- $83,200 a year before tax, at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (40 × 2,080). Each extra $1 an hour adds $2,080 a year at full-time hours; $15 an hour is $31,200 and $30 an hour is $62,400.
- How do part-time hours change the annual figure?
- Annual pay scales with hours. $18.50 an hour at 32 hours a week for 52 weeks is $30,784 a year, compared with $38,480 at 40 hours. Enter your real weekly hours and the calculator does the arithmetic.
- What are unpaid weeks off, and how are they used?
- Weeks you are not paid at all, such as unpaid leave or a seasonal gap. They reduce the paid weeks: $25 an hour at 40 hours for 50 paid weeks (2 unpaid) is $50,000, not $52,000. Paid vacation and paid holidays are paid time, so leave this box at 0 for them.
- Is this the same as my take-home pay?
- No. Everything here is gross, before federal and state income tax, Social Security and Medicare, and deductions such as health insurance or retirement contributions. Biweekly pay is the annual amount divided by 26 and semi-monthly pay is divided by 24, so a biweekly paycheck is slightly smaller than a semi-monthly one.
