500 KB PDF File — Sample Download, Exact Size
A valid 500 KB sample PDF of exactly 512,000 bytes, built in your browser: free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded. Shows which upload limits it meets.
Last updated:
A 512,000-byte PDF is half of 1 MB, which makes it the natural comfortably-under-the-default size for testing web servers. Press the button for a valid one-page PDF of exactly 500 KB, built on your device with nothing sent anywhere.
Built on your device in a moment: nothing is uploaded, and no file is hosted. A different size, another file type or a PDF with several pages: test file generator.
The exact file
| Size | 500 KB (1 KB counted as 1,024 bytes) |
|---|---|
| Exact length | 512,000 bytes |
| In decimal megabytes | 0.512 MB |
| As base64, as sent inside JSON | 682,668 bytes |
| Pages | 1 (the rest is unused data that readers skip) |
| Saved as | test-file-500kb.pdf |
Under nginx's default, over Express's
nginx refuses a request body above 1 MiB (1,048,576 bytes) by default, and Express's body parser refuses one above 100 KB, so a 500 KB file passes the first and fails the second. If an upload of this file gets a 413 error, that suggests the limit is in your application layer rather than in a stock nginx in front of it.
Will a 500 KB PDF pass these upload limits?
| Limit | Written as | This file |
|---|---|---|
| Express body-parser (default)the largest request body its JSON and form parsers accept. Express body-parser documentation | 100kb | Over: rejected unless the limit is raised |
| nginx (default)the largest request body nginx passes on; a bigger one gets a 413 error. nginx core module documentation | client_max_body_size 1m | Fits |
| PHP upload_max_filesize (default)the largest single uploaded file. PHP manual, core php.ini directives | 2M | Fits |
| PHP post_max_size (default)the largest whole POST request, all fields and files together. PHP manual, core php.ini directives | 8M | Fits |
| Gmail attachments (personal accounts)the largest total size of attachments on a message. Gmail Help, send attachments | 25 MB | Fits |
| Cloudflare upload limit (Free and Pro plans)the largest request body Cloudflare passes to your site. Cloudflare support docs, error 413 | 100 MB | Fits |
Each limit is the default or documented figure from the source named beside it. Your own server or plan may differ, and an upload is a request that carries headers as well as the file, which the "right at the limit" verdict allows for.
How long it takes to send
Over a 5 Mbps connection the 512,000 bytes take about 0.8 seconds to send, and at 20 Mbps about 0.2 seconds, so a progress bar hardly shows. If you are testing a progress indicator, use one of the larger sizes, such as the 5 MB or 10 MB page, which take long enough to watch. A transfer this quick has its own failure mode: a spinner that appears for a fraction of a second can flash and look like a glitch, so check that your interface settles cleanly after a fast success.
How long does a 500 KB upload take?
| Connection | Time to send 512,000 bytes |
|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | 0.8 s |
| 20 Mbps | 0.2 s |
| 100 Mbps | 0.0 s |
Best case: bytes times eight, divided by the speed in megabits per second, ignoring protocol overhead and the connection's ups and downs.
500 KB is a choice of units
The letters KB hide a choice. Counted the Windows way, 500 KB is 512,000 bytes (500 times 1,024), and counted the decimal way, as macOS does, it is 500,000 bytes. This file is the first. If a form states its limit as 500 KB, upload this one, then make a smaller file in the generator with the 1,000-byte setting to find out which reading the form uses.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I download a 500 KB PDF file?
- Press the download button on this page. Your browser builds a valid PDF of exactly 512,000 bytes in a moment and saves it as test-file-500kb.pdf. Nothing is uploaded and no file is hosted, so there is no link to copy: the file exists only on your device.
- Is 500 KB 500,000 or 512,000 bytes?
- It depends who is counting. Windows counts a kilobyte as 1,024 bytes, which makes this file 512,000 bytes, and macOS counts 1,000, which would make it 500,000. This file uses 1,024. For the other reading, set the test file generator to count 1 KB as 1,000 bytes.
- Does the PDF have more than one page?
- It has one page. The size comes from an unused block of data that PDF readers skip, not from extra pages. If you need a multi-page file, the test file generator makes a PDF of this size with up to 100 pages.
- Will a PDF this size open on a phone?
- Yes. Apart from the unused data block it is an ordinary one-page PDF, so any phone PDF viewer opens it and shows the test page.
