100 KB PDF File — Sample Download, Exact Size
A valid 100 KB sample PDF of exactly 102,400 bytes, built in your browser: free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded. Shows which upload limits it meets.
Last updated:
A 100 KB PDF is the smallest of the sample sizes here, and it sits exactly on a line developers meet early: 100 KB is the default request limit of Express's body parser. The button below builds a valid PDF of exactly 102,400 bytes on your device, so you can watch how your upload form, API or script behaves right at that edge.
Built on your device in a moment: nothing is uploaded, and no file is hosted. A different size, another file type or a PDF with several pages: test file generator.
The exact file
| Size | 100 KB (1 KB counted as 1,024 bytes) |
|---|---|
| Exact length | 102,400 bytes |
| In decimal megabytes | 0.102 MB |
| As base64, as sent inside JSON | 136,536 bytes |
| Pages | 1 (the rest is unused data that readers skip) |
| Saved as | test-file-100kb.pdf |
Why 102,400 bytes
A kilobyte here is 1,024 bytes, the way Windows counts it, so 100 KB is 102,400 bytes. Express's JSON and form parsers are limited by default to a size written as 100kb, which is the same 102,400 bytes. A request body the size of this file is therefore right at the line, and any extra fields or framing around it push it over. That makes this a handy first test: if your endpoint answers 413 here, the default limit is still in place.
Will a 100 KB PDF pass these upload limits?
| Limit | Written as | This file |
|---|---|---|
| Express body-parser (default)the largest request body its JSON and form parsers accept. Express body-parser documentation | 100kb | Right at the limit: with the upload's own headers the request goes over it |
| nginx (default)the largest request body nginx passes on; a bigger one gets a 413 error. nginx core module documentation | client_max_body_size 1m | Fits |
| PHP upload_max_filesize (default)the largest single uploaded file. PHP manual, core php.ini directives | 2M | Fits |
| PHP post_max_size (default)the largest whole POST request, all fields and files together. PHP manual, core php.ini directives | 8M | Fits |
| Gmail attachments (personal accounts)the largest total size of attachments on a message. Gmail Help, send attachments | 25 MB | Fits |
| Cloudflare upload limit (Free and Pro plans)the largest request body Cloudflare passes to your site. Cloudflare support docs, error 413 | 100 MB | Fits |
Each limit is the default or documented figure from the source named beside it. Your own server or plan may differ, and an upload is a request that carries headers as well as the file, which the "right at the limit" verdict allows for.
JSON uploads and base64
Sending a PDF inside JSON, as many APIs ask, means encoding it as base64, which turns every three bytes into four characters. A 102,400-byte PDF becomes 136,536 characters, which is over the Express default before the rest of the request is counted. If a JSON upload of this file fails, the encoded size is the number to compare with your limit, not the size of the file on disk.
How long does a 100 KB upload take?
| Connection | Time to send 102,400 bytes |
|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | 0.2 s |
| 20 Mbps | 0.0 s |
| 100 Mbps | 0.0 s |
Best case: bytes times eight, divided by the speed in megabits per second, ignoring protocol overhead and the connection's ups and downs.
What is inside the file
It is a one-page PDF that says it is a test page, followed by an unused block of random data that readers skip, which is how the file reaches exactly this size without changing what the page shows. It opens in any PDF reader. Because the extra data is random it does not compress, so zipping the file or running it through a compressor will not shrink it much.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I download a 100 KB PDF file?
- Press the download button on this page. Your browser builds a valid PDF of exactly 102,400 bytes in a moment and saves it as test-file-100kb.pdf. Nothing is uploaded and no file is hosted, so there is no link to copy: the file exists only on your device.
- Is a 100 KB PDF big enough to look like a real document?
- The page itself is a plain test page, and most of the bytes are the unused data block, so this is a size test, not a content test. For a realistic PDF at this size, take one of your own and shrink it with the PDF compressor set to the 100 KB target.
- Why does my upload fail at 100 KB?
- Two common causes are an API or web server whose default limit is 100 KB, and a JSON upload where the base64 version is a third bigger than the file. Look in the table on this page for the limit that matches your stack, then check the size of what is actually sent rather than the size of the file.
- How do I make a smaller or larger PDF than this?
- Use the test file generator on this site. It makes a PDF of any size from about 800 bytes to 200 MiB, and can give it up to 100 pages.
