GST Calculator India — Add Tax, Extract Tax, and Get CGST/SGST Breakdown Instantly
India's Goods and Services Tax (GST) applies to nearly every product and service transaction, but the mechanics of calculating it correctly — especially reverse-calculating the pre-tax price from a tax-inclusive total — trip up business owners, freelancers, and consumers regularly. This calculator handles all three scenarios: adding GST to a base price, extracting GST from an already-inclusive price, and computing the tax amount alone. It also shows the CGST and SGST breakdown for intra-state supplies.
How to use this calculator
Select your calculation mode: "Add tax to price" for calculating the final price from a base amount, "Extract tax from inclusive price" for finding the original pre-tax price from a GST-inclusive total, or "Tax amount only" for computing just the tax. Enter the amount and click the appropriate GST slab button — 5%, 12%, 18%, or 28% — or type any custom rate (e.g. 12.5%) for goods with special rates. The results show immediately: tax amount, pre-tax price, total inclusive price, and the CGST/SGST split for intra-state transactions.
Understanding India's GST slabs and CGST/SGST
India uses four primary GST rate slabs: 5% for essential goods like packaged foods and economy transport, 12% for processed foods, medicines, and some consumer goods, 18% for most services (including IT services, consulting, and SaaS), electronics, and telecom, and 28% for luxury goods, tobacco, and automobiles. For transactions within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally between the Central Government (CGST) and the State Government (SGST) — so 18% GST becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For transactions between states (inter-state), the full 18% is charged as IGST (Integrated GST) collected by the Centre and shared with the destination state.
Who uses this tool
Freelancers and consultants use it when raising GST invoices to verify the correct tax amount before sending to clients. Business owners use it to check whether a vendor's invoice has the correct GST applied. Consumers use it to verify whether a product is priced correctly with GST included or excluded on e-commerce platforms. Accountants use it for quick sanity checks on GST amounts before filing GSTR-1 or GSTR-3B returns.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I add GST to a price?
- Select 'Add tax to price', enter the base amount and the GST rate (e.g., 18%), and the calculator shows the tax amount and the final GST-inclusive price. For example, a base price of ₹1,000 at 18% gives ₹180 tax and a total of ₹1,180. This is the method used for calculating the price a customer pays.
- How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
- Select 'Extract tax from inclusive price', enter the tax-inclusive total and the GST rate, and the tool reverse-calculates the original pre-tax amount. The formula is: Base = Total ÷ (1 + rate/100). For example, if you paid ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST, the base price was ₹1,000 and the tax was ₹180.
- What are the GST rates in India?
- India has four main GST slabs: 5% (essential goods like cooking oil, sugar, tea), 12% (processed foods, medicines, packaged food), 18% (most services, electronics, restaurants), and 28% (luxury items, automobiles, tobacco). Fresh vegetables, grains, and milk are in the 0% exempt category. The 18% slab applies to the majority of services a business would invoice.
- What is CGST and SGST?
- For intra-state transactions (buyer and seller in the same state), GST is split equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For example, 18% GST = 9% CGST + 9% SGST on your invoice. For inter-state transactions, the full GST rate is charged as a single IGST (Integrated GST) instead, which is then distributed between the central and destination state governments.
- Can I enter a custom tax rate?
- Yes. Type any rate (e.g., 12.5%) in the tax rate field. The quick-select buttons for 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% are shortcuts for the most common GST slabs.
